Seeds of Sunshine, Ep. 68: “Three Ways to Become a Conversation Master with Leadership Coach Beth Wonson”
Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa and learn about our guest , who is a conversational guru and will teach you to become one as well!
On this Seeds of Sunshine episode:
Beth Wonson talks about the four-stage process when it comes to communication.
The first step is the story.
Step two is sifting just like a kid, who goes to the beach and uses those little plastic sifters. You put all the sand in and shake it and what's left, hopefully, are treasures, rocks, stones, and things that are important shells.
Step three is how to manage our own emotions. So in stage three, we're kicking the tires and making sure that it's our conversation. Everything we're bringing to the conversation needs to be relevant.
Step four is a process of managing ourselves so that we show up in the best way possible way.
Wonson’s powerful communication tool is the phrase that she expands upon during our conversation “Grace is in the space,” which is about pausing, being present, and not rushing to respond.
Curiosity and understanding are crucial in fostering good conversations.

Candid feedback that empowers people to grow, improve, and acknowledges human aspirational beliefs. That’s the desired outcome of anyone dispensing or receiving feedback. Your facilitation skills will benefit immensely from tuning in to this episode.
Throughout this strategy-packed episode, Lisa and Beth discuss real-life examples of how to provide feedback that empowers people and is fact-based. First Time Facilitator with Leanne Hughes, Episode 170: Putting Grace in the Space with Beth Wonson
“My guest today threw a crazy stat at me in this conversation: 99% of employees want feedback, however 75% of managers don’t like giving feedback.
I feel like if you could talk about some of the challenges that are faced in organizations today, you could relate it back to this one statistic.
Toady we’re talking about feedback and I’m joined by Beth Wonson from NCDsolution.com. This is a quasi episode mixing up two topics:
1) Feedback conversations - how to get better at having them
2) Facilitation: In particular, how to centre yourself before a workshop, and what you do when you receive negative feedback about your workshop - you know that negative bias we all have?
What I love about Beth’s work is the simplicity of what she shares, and how applicable it can be to you - If you know you’e been avoiding feedback for some time, this is a great opportunity and reminder on how to normalise giving and receiving feedback, and taking away that stigma attached to it.”
