A Simple Plan for the Year Ahead
If you and those around you aren’t clear on where you’re going, how can you possibly get there?
Start Here
Follow my top tips to help you make your 2023 goal setting easier, and clear enough so you can take action. These strategies work for both individual goals and for organizational goals.
Identify what the 3-4 most important things that, when done, will have a big positive impact on your business or work life this coming year.
Limit your list to 3-4 items.
Keep it simple. Micro goals are easy to understand, written in just a phrase or sentence.
Explore the shadow side. Include a section on what you will STOP doing.
Share them with others – especially those who can help make them happen (and those who can get in the way either iIntentionally or unintentionally).
Make them visible. Post where you can see them several times a day. Don’t stuff them in a folder or only have them saved in your computer.
Aspire! Write an aspirational sentence that answers the question, “What will be different when we (I) achieve these goals?”
Always evolve. As you complete your micro-goals or they are no longer relevant, write new ones and start the process again.
Let Me Demonstrate
This is an example from a 1-hour consulting session I did recently. Some information changed for confidentiality.
In 2023 we will increase revenue and improve customer experience.
Micro Goals:
Return to being open 6 days per week by June.
Create a recruitment and training initiative to attract new employees by March.
Create a strategy to provide on-going training and on-going coaching to employees to increase service, enthusiasm, and engagement by April.
Hire new leadership with the experience, enthusiasm, and talent to drive this initiative by Feb.
What we will stop doing:
Making excuses.
Blaming forces outside of our control. Instead we’ll look for new solutions.
Focusing our energy on employees who don’t share this vision. Instead we’ll focus on employees who do.
Fear taking calculated risks.
Working in silos
