My Coaching Journey: How Professional Support Transformed Me
I've recently taken a significant step in my professional development by hiring a coach to enhance my speaking presence and skills. While I already feel confident speaking in front of groups, my goal is to amplify the message of how Navigating Challenging Dialogue® can reduce stress, drama, and unnecessary conflict in our lives and workplaces.
I need to reach a wider audiences to this. Perhaps even deliver a TED Talk someday!
Throughout my career, I've discovered that when I'm feeling stuck, need to gain confidence, or have a long-desired goal that keeps getting postponed, working with a coach provides the momentum I need. Why does coaching work so well for me?
First, it represents my concrete commitment to myself. I deliberately block time on my calendar for coaching sessions and engage in meaningful self-reflection that's otherwise easy to avoid.
Most importantly, a skilled coach provides objective insights into my behavioral patterns and beliefs that I might miss on my own. And a coach who has practical experience in whatever I’m now working on, provides guidance and strategy that could otherwise take me a lot of time to discover on my own.
I understand the vulnerability involved in working with a coach—I've experienced it firsthand across four coaching relationships throughout my career.
My first coaching experience wasn’t great. The experience taught me valuable lessons about trusting my instincts when someone makes unrealistic promises. And it shaped the kind of coach I am today.
The second coaching relationship, a business development group led by someone I deeply respected, offered practical feedback and processes that significantly advanced my business.
After the pandemic, when I questioned whether I still had the drive to recommit to my business in a dramatically changed world, my third coach provided compassionate guidance that rekindled my belief in the importance of my work. Through strategic direction and gentle encouragement, I rediscovered my passion for connecting with people and sharing the power of Navigating Challenging Dialogue.
I'm sharing these experiences because I understand the hesitation you might feel around coaching.
Coaching can indeed make you feel vulnerable, and you might wonder if the financial investment could be better used elsewhere. I know these feelings well. But I also know the exhilaration of those breakthrough moments—when challenges suddenly appear manageable, when impossible goals become achievable, and when passion and commitment are reignited. When success is achieved, there is nothing like it.
Movement toward what we want always begins with action.
For me, that action has typically started with an exploratory call to assess alignment and chemistry with a potential coach. If you've been curious about coaching or feeling stuck or uninspired lately, I'd welcome a conversation—no hard sales tactics, I promise.
My commitment to you is to create a space where you can explore whether coaching might be right for you at this moment in your journey.
